the set up of Twitter and Instagram is making ppl even more stupid.
The limited word count of Twitter has decided information cannot be in depth. Every tweet is a thumbnail of an unelaborated opinion - but how valid that opinion is remains unknown.
Ppl are expected to speculate and fill in the unsaid meaning of a short tweet. In fact, the audience is leading the process of idea construction. This process puts so many more layers onto the original meaning and makes it modified according to audience's own experiences.
The lack of fluent idea construction caused the tweets to be heavily emotional and personal. This is an inevitable result when one has to summarize both feelings and thoughts into 280 characters. Also, it is inevitable when audience has to read through a thread to understand smth
Then, what is the point of explaining when the behaviour itself is prohibited by the set up? And what is the point when the audience is more likely to lose focus and swipe to other tweets?
At the same time, it also doesn't help with idea formation. It creates a delusion that ideas could be completed with the 280 characters while the fact is that there is much more thinkings required than this to have a mature idea
It makes ppl who type out their ideas only focus on the one sentence that they are typing within one tweet box. The connection between this tweet and the other tweets on one thread is not paid attention to. It makes ppl easier to lose their thoughts in the middle of tweeting.
For the same reason, it also creates the delusion of that a full understanding of a topic could be gained from a thumbnail.
Word count also encourages media to have more stupid competitions over titles of their headlines - the deviance between the titles and the contents is easier to be spotted now because a title must be 'interesting' and 'sharp' enough to grab attention.
It again creates erroneous information on input to the audience, esp when ppl don't click to read the article.
Instagram on the other side, does not prohibit meaning to be transmitted through text. But as it's emphasis is on visual information, text is less important.
Talking about visual information, its again about interpretation based on one's own experience. Problems caused by limit word count are also spotted here.
Besides, visual information is more powerful because it gives a stronger impression then words. It validates an idea by giving a physical correspondence. Yet, how representative the information conveyed in a picture is is not considered.
Twitter and Instagram are def making ppl more stupid if they are the main source of information. And their undeniable popularity says a thing about ppl's preference - the traditional information transmit methods are no longer welcomed
They are slow, inefficient, requires more focus and patience. It doesn't matter if they have well-structured ideas, ppl just prefer the easier ways to grab as much information as possible within a short time.
Everything is about efficiency and speed now. Despite speed does not mean productivity nor quality, ppl tend to equate them.
And now I'm tired of typing tweets over my phone and my thumbs hurt. I've also lost focus because I hate looking backs and checking my flow. So no matter how not-in-depth my idea is, I'm gonna stop.
The focus of this thread is not about creative contents
