Shortly we'll be joining and live tweeting from @TimesTalks session on COVID-19 and the Gender Divide, with hosts @FrancescaDonner & @Alisha__g, and special guest @nahlav, senior gender adviser, Executive Office of the Secretary-General, United Nations.
"Crisis amplify existing inequalities, women work more and earn less. While everyone suffers economically in the short term, for women the economic shock lasts longer" @nahlav
"Women make up the essential workers, 1 in 3 jobs that have been designated essential are held by women and 78% of health workers are women, but they are underpaid and undervalued" @Alisha__g
"As countries are shutting down the care work at home has increased substantially and these responsibilities fall disproportionately on the shoulders of women. Globally women hold 3 times more care work, but this varies and in some countries it's 6-7 times" @nahlav
"Some men have had to assume a greater role in domestic work. Even if you have a temporary shift in the care burden, it tends to last, this might be a possible silver lining" @Alisha__g #NYTLiveAtHome
"If schools don't open but offices start opening, guess who is going to go back to work? We've fought for decades and the pandemic could wipe it all out" @Alisha__g #NYTLiveAtHome
"Globally there is a massive increase in reporting of domestic violence. This is the tip of the iceberg and we won't know the scope until we lift lock-down measures" @nahlav #NYTLiveAtHome
"There are countries that are earmarking funds for domestic violence, and others who are marking shelters as essential services, countries turning their pharmacies into reporting services, pop-up services in grocery stores" @nahlav #NYTLiveAtHome #FundHer
"At the end of the day it's about shifting our culture of normal, recognizing it's not ok to lift your hand against a woman or girl" @nahlav #NYTLiveAtHome
"How to better protect black and brown women? There are layers of inequality and racial/class inequality is a huge one. How do we ensure that our stimulus packages are targeting the most vulnerable? It's their labor that supports all of us." @nahlav #NYTLiveAtHome
"We're seeing an increase in neighbors and community members reporting violence. It's important for us to feel responsibility for all members of our community" @nahlav #NYTLiveAtHome
"I want to live in this world that @nahlav has envisioned, where stress leads to collaboration" @Alisha__g #FeministRealities
"During Ebola, in Sierra Leon, since all resources were dedicated to the virus, maternity wards were left understaffed and there was an increase in maternal mortality." @Alisha__g #FeministRealities
"As we respond to the virus we shift resources and that impacts disproportionately women's access to sexual and reproductive health care" @nahlav
"Distribution of contraception products is also disrupted, but a lot of countries are not designating abortion clinics as essential services. If women don't have access to safe services they might take the route of unsafe abortions and end up dying" @Alisha__g #NYTLiveAtHome
"How will the pandemic impact inclusion efforts? Positively? Negatively? Results will depend on how we choose to respond" @Alisha__g @nahlav #NYTLiveAtHome
Stimulus & rescue packages must include the needs and realities of women. Feminist movements have a lot of experiences to share, to break away from the current exploitative systems and move towards #FeministRealities that center people and the planet.
