Today is a sad day for democracy: 7 of our New Reformer candidates have been knocked off the ballot.

People lose faith in our political process when a government body denies seven outstanding citizens, community leaders, activists, & organizers the chance to run for office.

We’ve recruited & trained over 20 amazing candidates all over Queens. We knew this day would come, but we didn’t know how unjust it would be.

The @BOENYC disqualified the petitions for these NR candidates at the hearing:
• Moumita Ahmed, for DL
• Maria Kaufer, for JD

BOE refused to hear the following candidates & removed them from the ballot before the hearing (i.e., these candidates were not even on the hearing calendar & deemed disqualified prior to the hearing):
• Peter Beadle, for DL
• Alison Abulafia, for DL
• Jesse Laymon, for DL

Finally, these candidates were removed on the basis of objections:
• Nick Haby, for DL
• Lorenzo Brea, for DL

Objections are based on technicalities (i.e. invalid signature, wrong address, incorrect name, registration, and anything that doesn’t match the voter’s record).

They are taking her off the ballot because the mailman didn’t deliver her letter during #COVID19.

Her name (Moumita) did not match her government issued name she’s registered to vote with.

This flaw in the system favors “Americanized” names, thus making the decision to knock her off inherently racist!

We’re going to court to fight for our New Reformers & the movement!
