@DrJWardRobinson, the director of Strategic Partnerships at the Institute for Global Health - UMass-Amherst, thinking about other countries with less robust public health systems

(1/x)
This is a time of social distancing, which goes against our natural inclination to be close to those we care for.

Even in the US, the health disparities remain. Our educational systems are not equitable. Our essential workforce is predominantly female and people of color (2/x)
Next, E. William Colglazier Editor-in-Chief of Science & Diplomacy and Senior Scholar at @SciDip @aaas.

How can scientific advisors to the nation provide support to policymakers? How well is the science-policy interface operating?

New Zealand is seeing about 5 new cases a day.

We've seen volunteers to be able to call every student personally to check in. There's a history of volunteerism in NZ. To connect with them. The academic community is connecting as well.

We are likely to move into a hybrid world of education, rather than reverting back to what we had before.

We'll think deeply about the value of being in-person. While we've managed to make our way with some tech, there is a need for human connection.

Paraphrase from @DrJWardRobinson: This is not a build it & they will come situation. We want to build trust. With testing and the history of damage done by the government on communities of color, there have to be meaningful efforts to restore that trust.

The gap between the modeling and the impact on individual lives much be built. Good communication, relationships, & efforts to build trust across communities can create an environment where evidence & research can will be adopted quickly by stakeholders.

^ from Dr. de la Rey

From Dr. Colglazier, there needs to be a willingness to listen to the community for their questions, concerns, and curiosities. What matters to them? How are we using what we hear?

#HigherEdCovid19 10/x
From @DrJWardRobinson, we must talk about the ethics of the situation. We must talk about the underlying inequities in health, housing, and education that have left many communities of color in a more vulnerable state. We are talking about lives.

Dr. de la Rey raises the profile of the other frontline workers who are working to deliver produce, to keep grocery stores and other essential services working. We're seeing groups of people who often do not get credit finally being attended to.

Tomorrow, we get prepared for our 7th & FINAL of the #HigherEdCovid19 convos
