Black, Asian & People of colour are disproportionately dying

Poorer health

Barriers to accessing healthcare &

Premature deaths of BME people

Are NOT a new phenomenon

This long-standing injustice & inequality

Will NOT be addressed

If we fail to acknowledge the
🚨R-WORD 🚨
Racism within healthcare
IS an issue

Studies show BME women more likely:

⬆️Suffer delay for chest pain treatment

⬆️Symptoms pain ignored by clinicians

⬆️ Suffer incorrect diagnosis

Now I’m NOT saying drs/nurses are racist!

But we ALL have unconcious bias
Need to acknowledge
‘Racial’ health inequalities

Closely mirrors socio-economic inequalities between racialised groups

Focusing attention on a magical pill or ‘genetic differences’

Diverts attention away from what we KNOW are the underlying factors

And the policies that drive these inequalities
We need to ask WHY

We have social economic inequality betw racialised groups

WHY does it take BME people TWICE as long to find somewhere to rent?

WHY are BME over-reliant on insecure low paid work?

WHY has govt NOT suspended policies which we know cause racial discrimination?
Social-economic factors have a much greater impact on health than ‘biological factors’

But Research shows that everyday discrimination & racism

Leads to ⬆️ cortisol & visceral fat

which predisposes:

⬆️ Diabetes

⬆️ heart disease

⬆️ premature death
