AS LONG AS WE'RE RETHINKING EVERYTHING: It's *insane* that paper "covers" rock
I mean, let's have a fight where I get a rock and you get a piece of paper. I like my chances.
The only justification I can think of is that the rock is somehow demoralized by being covered. I sort of like this idea, and will happily read a 10,000-word essay supporting it.
