Topic: self harm/suicide

This thread is about seeking suicide permission. Please only read if you have the emotional bandwidth to address this issue with me.

We're living in dark times. The mental health implications of mandated isolation have been studied and proven to be highly traumatic on even the most introverted people. We are biologically programmed to require human connection and companionship.

(2/
Risk factors for suicide and COVID-19 have a lot in common; Loss of financial security/employment, exposure to overwhelming news coverage, feelings of intense fear and anxiety, depression, social isolation, substance abuse, disruptions in routine and sleep patterns, etc.

(3/
That being said, warning signs of suicide often include behavior you might not normally consider, so I'd like to shine a light on a few for the purposes of this thread:

Impulsivity. Aggression. Withdrawal from emotional ties.

(4/
Some people seek suicidal permission by distancing themselves from others (often subconsciously) using a powerful tool: cruelty. Chronic and impulsive bouts of anger or rudeness are a method of self-isolation which, to a suicidal person, dulls the impact of their decision.

(5/
The more people dislike you or berate you, the more you may feel you won't be missed. The internet has truly given people the perfect tool for this unhealthy behavior, as being cruel to others anonymously feels less emotionally impactful than direct confrontation.

(6/
All that I can ask is that we try to look past this. All I can ask is that you don't dogpile people who say outright offensive things right now. Block, report, do what you feel is necessary to remove hate from your feeds, but PLEASE do not give them the permission they seek.

(7/
Shroud them with support and let them know that they aren't alone right now. I know it feels difficult to be kind to the cruel. If you find it too difficult to meet them with kindness, please try to walk away. Don't draw negative attention from the masses. It's permission.

(8/
I lost someone. He wasn't okay. He pushed us all away and behaved like an asshole. We told him to fuck off. He got what he wanted and I'll never stop being angry that I didn't lead with kindness.

Check on your friends. Lead with kindness. Don't forget to love each other.
