Privacy is best understood as a religion in the EU
But some are struggling to keep the faith
Privacy heathens are using all sorts of wanton methods to try and get a grip on Coronavirus. Will Europe be left behind?
Not necessarily. Privacy rules have pretty broad exemptions for tracking people, providing its proportionate and only used for the pandemic. A seatbelt rather than a handbrake as @EUstaran beautifully put it.
So the question moves from law to politics and society. Where do Europeans draw the line between health and privacy?
It& #39;s the first time that citizens have the choice and ultimately face the consequences. All rights are always a question of balance. Privacy is no exception.
Until now, privacy has been a pretty top-down affair. A huge deal in Brussels, but which fails to grab wider public imagination. Covid-19 may change that.
Brussels has a paranoid streak right now, when it comes to EU& #39;s place in world. It has been happy to junk other values for the sake of political survival (particularly during refugee crisis). Would EU& #39;s current conception of privacy be any different?
