THREAD: In partnership w/ @TheFundChicago, we are discussing the anticipated impact of #COVID19 on IL students, implications & policy considerations, and legislative recovery approach & priorities w/ Rep. Will Davis & Sen. @AndyManar.
Rep. Will Davis: This crisis has shown us where we have failed our students.
@Ann_Whalen01, @advanceillinois Policy Director: The interruption caused by #COVID19 will impact about 1/3 of the school year.
@Ann_Whalen01: Even when planned, students from low-income households and students of color are most at a disadvantage with remote learning.
Students from low-income households, Black, and Latinx students are most likely lack access to e-learning - further exacerbating racial/ethnic inequities.
@Ann_Whalen01: This crisis could potentially widen the achievement gap.
. @MsAnichini, President and CEO of @TheFundChicago: At, @ChiPubSchools, principals and their teams are on the front lines and are thinking about what students will need in the long run.
. @MsAnichini: We talked and continue to talk to principals. We heard that principals are concerned with engaging with their families. They are concerned about bridging the digital divide and about the social-emotional impact this is having on adults and students.
. @MsAnichini: They are worried about budgeting and planning for re-entry given the many uncertainties. They said they're going to need talented new teachers. They need time and resources to be able to do the work.
. @MsAnichini: 4 Conclusions from discussions w/ Principals - Students will have social emotional needs. Response must be equitable. All states are creating solutions, IL could be a leader in this. Time to address issues will be crucial.
. @rmsteans: In moving forward, we must first ask ourselves: "What do our students need, and what are we going to do to get them there?"
. @rmsteans: Teachers are going to need training. They are going to need great professional development. This will be true for all teachers but especially for new teachers.
. @rmsteans: The state budget situation is dire. If we want to put more funds into Evidence-Based Funding to address our students' and teachers' needs, we are going to need additional funding from the federal government.

Q: What do you think the top-of-mind issues are?
. @AndyManar: Some of these inequities we've known about for a long time. We should be critiquing our systems and know that we will have an opportunity to make them better when all of this is over.
