Consular protection refers to the help a government provides its citizens who are living or travelling abroad and are in need of assistance.

This covers everything from lost passports or travel documents all the way through to those who have been arrested or detained.
In Britain the government has the ability to choose when it does and does not offer this assistance to its citizens.

This is sometimes called 'discretionary' protection.

British Rights Abroad Group says the Foreign Commonwealth Office should have a duty to help in all cases.
Do you think the UK government should have to provide consular protection?
