Arm strength vs accuracy - a thread:

Arm strength is definitely overrated, but it's not that it's completely irrelevant, either.

You need to have a viable arm. Juuuuust enough to even function.

But a rocket arm is nothing in isolation.
Arm strength needs to be paired with the ability to process, get through reads and then lastly actually deliver the ball accurately at the end of it.

There's no point throwing - somewhere - at 100mph. Landing in the right place is pretty vital.
Arm strength buys you a greater margin for error. Cam Newton has consistently in his career completed passes most QBs can't, cos he had the arm to get the ball in on passes he was late on.

Haskins did this at times last year. A plus arm buys you time to be late and still win.
On the flip side, you can have a relative noodle and still succeed, but now you need to be better than most at anticipation and accuracy.

Guys like Cam can be late, you've got to be early - consistently - cos if you're not, you don't have the arm to get it there.
I think you need to look at arm strength+the ability to throw accurately+early as two different sliders. If one goes down the other has to go up to counter it, or that QB can't succeed.

This was Cody Kessler's failing. Was good when he processed quickly, but didn't often enough
So Joe Burrow's arm has been criticized by some, but Burrow is SO good at accuracy and anticipation it doesn't matter.

His arm strength slider is a little below average maybe, but his A+A slider is well over the 90th percentile, so he's really good.
Lastly, arm strength has almost nothing to do with throwing deep. Gardner Minshew was one of the best deep passers last season with a below avg arm. Deep shots are timing, touch and accuracy.

Chad Pennington had an awesome deep ball.

Arm strength is about velocity+geometry
