genuinely aggrieved that so many people do not distinguish between an Essay (which requires a writer only to think and feel) and well-written, deeply-reported journalism (which requires MONTHS OF FACT GATHERING, MONEY TO GO PLACES and, usually, LAWYERS)
thinking and feeling are very difficult, I'm sure.
There might be some slight confusion between "an essay" and "stunt journalism," in which an actual reporter is assigned to experience something and have thoughts/ feelings about it

which they usually do with all the subtlety of a mime outlining nonexistant objects
so, no, it's not really hard to tell the difference

(I do love stunt journalism)
