Hello! It’s Wendy, GWL Librarian here. It’s #WorldBookNight so I’m taking over our GWL Twitter account 3-4pm to chat with you about my all-time favourite subject - BOOKS!
We've been taking part since #WorldBookNight started in 2011 (when we were featured on BBC2’s The Culture Show!), so WOW, this is our 10th year 🥳
#WorldBookNight is a national celebration of books and reading. Working in a library, we see the life-changing power of reading every day. People can find comfort, connection, joy, hope, inspiration, laughter & strength between the pages of a book...📕
And so many of our reading groups, such as Story Café, Drama Queens & Readers of Colour have been sparked into glorious life & sustained by the sharing of stories. So we LOVE taking part in #WorldBookNight
This year is a bit different of course. We’ll still be receiving our #WorldBookNight giveaway book ‘Things a Bright Girl Can Do’ later this year http://bit.ly/2XFjNu2
But in the meantime, we want to support #WorldBookNight by creating a book buzz online & taking part in their #ReadingHour, & we’d love you to join us!
Over the next hour, our GWL staff, volunteers & readers will be sharing books they love. Choosing a book can sometimes be a bit overwhelming, or it can be hard to get yourself out of a ‘reading rut’ – we’ve all been there! Recommendations can be a great starting place 😊
If you’d like to recommend a book, share it with us using #ReadingHour Feel free to tweet us a photo of your book, and if you’ve paired that with a lovely cuppa & delicious snack, even better 😍
Here’s Emilie to get us started with her choice – ‘Fingersmith’ by Sarah Waters, the very first World Book Night book we ever gave away! http://bit.ly/2RV8V7N  #WorldBookNight #ReadingHour
Do you remember @SueJohnGWL you recommended it to me years ago & I was hooked, it has the BEST ever twist!
Morag from our National Lifelong Learning Team @moraggwl picks a gorgeous read, ‘The Summer Book’ by Tove Jansson http://bit.ly/34YZjOt  #WorldBookNight #ReadingHour
Tove Jansson was an incredibly talented writer and artist, particularly remembered for her iconic children’s books, ‘The Moomins’, which have been translated into about 50 languages...
Her short story ‘The Invisible Child’, from ‘Tales from the Moominvalley’, is a beautiful tale about the power of caring and empathy. You can listen to the story read by Tove Jansson's niece, Sophia http://bit.ly/2VqIc5a
Talking of children’s books, here’s @EmilyrIlett from our Admin Team, giving a big thumbs up these mischievous characters from ‘Bikes and Knights’ by @GabrielleKent http://bit.ly/2XTSdtg  #WorldBookNight #ReadingHour
As well as working hard @womenslibrary @EmilyrIlett somehow finds time to be a children’s writer too! So I’m giving a shout out to her gorgeous debut novel, ‘The girl who lost her shadow’ 🥰 #WorldBookNight #ReadingHour
Still on the theme of children’s books, Guyatri has made a most excellent choice - ‘Good night stories for rebel girls’ by Francesca Cavallo and Elena Favilli http://bit.ly/2KxPo97  #WorldBookNight #ReadingHour That’s one of my favourite books on our shelves Guyatri!
Now for some YA fiction! Mariam loves reading Glasgow writer Sufina Mazhar http://bit.ly/2Vw6r1Z  #WorldBookNight #ReadingHour We’ve been lucky enough to work with Sufina, she talks so engagingly about her writing journey, thanks for recommending her Mariam!
If you’re looking for something about freedom & rebellion, with a gothic feel, then look no further than @BadsvilleBroad recommendation ‘The confessions of Frannie Langton’ by @mrsjaneymac http://bit.ly/2yHifVR  #WorldBookNight #ReadingHour
Another historical novel to whet your appetite ‘Romancing Mr Bridgerton’ by Julia Quinn, recommended by comedian @LubnaKerr http://bit.ly/3cHm9wR  #WorldBookNight #ReadingHour Thanks Lubna, I love a book with humour & great dialogue!
If non-fiction is more your cup of tea @mattiemarygrace from our Admin Team recommends hot-off-the-press @alisonphipps ‘Me not you: the trouble with mainstream feminism’ http://bit.ly/2VyLiUR  #WorldBookNight #ReadingHour Definitely one for our wish-list Mattie..
Another brilliant non-fiction suggestion by Katy @Kairos_women is ‘Lowborn’ by @ThatKerryHudson http://bit.ly/3cGWcNO  We were thrilled to have Kerry at our Open the Door Women’s Writing Festival last year. Thanks Katy (love your bookshelves!) #WorldBookNight #ReadingHour
Alana has picked a really interesting travel journal, ‘Begums, Thugs & White Mughals’ by Fanny Parks http://bit.ly/3brXn3z  I hadn't heard of this book, so it’s been great to get your recommendation Alana – thanks for sharing it with us #WorldBookNight #ReadingHour
Nature and landscape can take us out of ourselves @SueJohnGWL has the perfect book to immerse yourself in, ‘The Living Mountain’ by Nan Shepherd, a writer who was way ahead of her time with her luminous prose http://bit.ly/2Y0bfyi  #WorldBookNight #ReadingHour
I think @passingplace ‘A Scots Dictionary of Nature’ would make a beautiful pairing with ‘The Living Mountain’ #WorldBookNight #ReadingHour Both are so full of wonder. What would your perfect pair of books be? 🌿
Wonderful @LLLLaura from our Production Team recommends ‘I might regret this’ by comedian, writer & star of Broad City @abbijacobson #WorldBookNight #ReadingHour I'm trying to get your video uploaded Laura, my internet is playing up...I'll keep trying 🤨
This has been such fun! I hope our wonderful readers have managed to inspire you with their book love! A big shout out to @GabrielleGWL & the fantastic volunteers who subtitled all our videos. Thanks so much for helping to make our #WorldBookNight accessible 😊
Enjoy the rest of #WorldBookNight folks! I’m off to put the kettle on and treat myself to the last few chapters of @DameDeniseMina ‘Gods and Beasts’ (it is TENSE!), and then dip into @AuntieStuds stunning graphic memoir ‘Sensible Footwear’ (what joy!)
