3. Iran and the Cold War: The Azerbaijan crisis of 1946 by Louise Fawcett @CambridgeUP - a classic history of the Azerbaijan crisis, really situated Iran at the start of the Cold War. #iran #iranianhistory #coldwarhistory
4. In the Shadow of the King: Zill al-Sultan and Isfahan under the Qajars by Heidi Walcher @ibtauris - a highly detailed and rich book about the Qajar governor of Isfahan, the shah that never was. #iran #iranianhistory #qajariran

7. Iran between two revolutions by Ervand Abrahamian @PrincetonUPress - no list would be complete without this. An incredible study of the Tudeh Party and Iran’s political development. #iran #iranianhistory #tudehparty
8. Nixon, Kissinger and the Shah by @RohamAlvandiLSE @OxUniPress - really establishes the Shah at the heart of US diplomacy during the Cold War. A gem for Pahlavi studies. #iran #iranianhistory #pahlavi #nixon #kissinger #coldwar
9. Both Eastern and Western: An Intellectual History of Iranian Modernity by Afshin Matin-Asgari @CambridgeUP - an accessible and highly readable intellectual history of Iran, examining the different ideologies from right to left. A joy. #iran #iranianhistory
10. And finally, the Emergence of Iranian Nationalism: Race and the Politics of Dislocation by @RezaZiaEbrahimi @ColumbiaUP - again, a readable and accessible examination of Iranian nationalism, touching on key themes such as Aryanism, otherness, pre-Islam and Islam. #iran
