This is completely disingenuous. 1. The NDP government in no way “threw money at the problem” of attracting doctors to rural Alberta. I’d challenge @roger4LivMac to provide an iota of evidence to back this claim up ... https://twitter.com/roger4livmac/status/1253050766576586752
2. The challenge of rural physician recruitment is not a 4 year old problem. It’s always been a challenge. In the 1990s @AlbertaRhPAP was created to address it. Shortly after it was created, the Klein cuts decimated rural medicine for a generation ...
3. We had literally just begun to vclimb out of that hole in Southern and West Central Alberta in the last five years. Much work still to be done North of the Yellowhead but the needle was moving. Building a sustainable rural health workforce takes time ...
4. It takes partnership between all stakeholders - municipalities, doctors, patients and government. It takes a plan. The plan was beginning to bear fruit. The success stories were being shared https://rhpap.ca/building-on-success/. The UCP, backed by its rural MLAs, has burnt it to the ground
5. @Albertadoctors, particularly multiple rural colleagues, cannot figure out why rural MLAs would do thus to their constituents. Some believe there is malicious intent. Hanson’s razor states “Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.” ...
6. But it’s got to be one or the other doesn’t it @roger4LivMac? If it’s malice, hiring Janice MacKinnon, who oversaw the wholesale destruction of rural health care in Saskatchewan, was a good move. The E&Y report told you to shutter and reduce services at rural hospitals ...
7. But if it’s malice please be honest with your constituents. Tell them they aren’t entitled to the same services because they voluntarily chose to live rurally and it just costs too much. Show some integrity and honesty on this file, so docs can get on with our plans to leave.
8. But if it’s not malice - if Hanlon was right and it’s really stupidity at work here - stop. Just stop. Talk to doctors who’ve lived rurally for decades, who want to build a sustainable rural health system more than anyone. Stop working against us, and start working with us.
