On the 21k USD issue,

I want to contribute as a parent and an educator. Bearing in mind that I do not want to write a book here, I'll limit myself to just a few points.

There are quite a few things at play in this scenario; first being that this must be a dysfunctional family, https://twitter.com/Dareel_baker/status/1253100207283277830
if the voice in the background is actually that of the mother.

Also evident from the father's statements that the bad performance is a pattern.

I read many of the tweets responding to the video and saw different angles people took, so I might be making reference to some
of them.

I want to address both the angle of the children and that of the parents.
CHILD
1. In life, you can't have only the things you want. Sometimes you have to accommodate even the things you don't like. It's called DISCIPLINE.

Some are saying, 'he got Distinction in music, so that must be his passion; allow him to follow his passion'.
That's not the point! To have a degree in Music, for e.g. you don't just sing and dance, there are other subjects you must take and pass.

You must be serious with them and pass them, while loving music.

Ask the medics and people in life sciences, many hated Physics, but had
to learn and pass it, to get to being Doctors, Microbiologists etc.
DISCIPLINE IS TAUGHT AND LEARNED EARLY IN LIFE.

2. Abuse of privilege: some children take life for granted and have no sense of value.

Some don't know that it's not every child that is lucky enough to be sent
to school.

A child must learn to appreciate and not abuse privileges. This is also taught and learned early in life.

3. Type of punishment:
@Segalink children are different. For some, appealing to the conscience and emotions by talking works; for some, that cane is needed to
get through to them.

It all depends on personality and temperament. This also shows early in life.

Parents must know their children.
PARENTS

1. If you don't try to instill values in your children early, those values will not magically appear when baby-Emy or Jnr becomes a man.

2. If you think that the more money you spend on tuition, the better results you get? Na Lie! Maybe one day someone will do a
survey on which institutions (public or private) produced the most renowned individuals (not counting politicians).

When your child is consistently not performing, find out why like @AishaYesufu or as suggested by @trending_medic.
Money doesn't solve every problem.
3. When you look at your child's report card, pay attention to columns that show actual score in each subject, Class average and teacher's comment; not just promoted or not promoted.

In some schools, #richfolkschools, the teachers must promote because they don't want your
Christmas and Easter gifts to stop.

4. If your child has a learning disability, is dull academically, or just lazy, you'll know early, if you pay attention.

You'll know by the time they take standardized exams like #commonentrance after primary education.
DO NOT PAY FOR AN IMPERSONATOR to help your child pass Common Entrance, because you'll end up paying for #JAMB and #WAEC and #University admission and when they hit road block there, they will start trying to sort or threaten lecturers.

**Yes, this is a sore point for me as an
educator, because these sorts of kids are stressing us!

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CHILD.

IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM EARLY.

That's why you're parents.
5. Finally (though not necessarily the case in this video, since this child is still trying to finish secondary school), do not try to push your own dreams onto your child.

Find out what their own dreams and talents are and help them realize them.
This is a major cause of failure, dropping out, depression, suicide etc.
