Ole Gunnar Solskjær needs time; a thread.
There will be 4 parts of this thread:
1. Tactics
2. Transfer Activities
3. Youth
4. Conclusion
Let’s start off with Solskjær’s tactics. Ole is constantly being called out for his lack of tactics and often being called a ‘PE Teacher.’ This criticism is strange as Ole is only the second man in history to beat Pep Guardiola thrice in one season, he has also done the double
over Chelsea and beaten Jose Mourinho on his return to Old Trafford. These wins would not be achieved by a ‘clueless’ manager.
In the Games against the ‘big 6’ Ole deploys a 5-2-1-2 formation with two holding midfielders, a free number 10 and two split number 9s. This has been very effective and has got United the second most points against top 6 clubs in the league behind Liverpool.
In this formation Ole plays two players in positions they are not known for playing. He plays Luke Shaw as a left centre back and Daniel James as a right, split striker. Both of these have been very effective as Luke Shaw has had some of his best performances in the LCB role
and also Dan James has been vital to some wins (most notable win being Man City) as his electrifying pace and good eye for a pass has been vital to United’s counter attack. Solskjaer’s tactics involve the back 5 sitting back with 2 DMs shielding the back 5. As soon as the ball
is won back it is then given to one of the DMs and a quick transition is started through the number 10 and then to either of the split strikers. Also, the defensive organisation has been very good recently under Solskjaer as United have got the 2nd most clean sheets in Europe
and they have also only conceded two goals the last 11 games (both being goalkeeper errors)
In conclusion, Calling Ole a ‘clueless’ manager who is ‘tactically inept’ is completely unjustified as he has shown in the big games that he has plenty of effective tactics to get the points.
Moving on now to Transfers. Ole has brought in 5 players since becoming United manager: James, Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Fernandes and Ighalo (loan)
Wan-Bissaka and Maguire have both drastically improved United’s defence to the point where they are conceding 0.5 less goals per game compared to last season and they have also got the 4th best defensive record in the league, compared to 11th best the previous season.
These two signings have made United a much better team and are a sign that Solskjær knows what he is doing regarding signings.
Now onto his attacking signings, Dan James was signed for £15m and although he has had his inconsistencies, he has overall been a good signing contributing to 11 G/A in all competitions and has been vital to some big games as mentioned earlier.
Now onto the signings who have been here for a shorter period of time. Bruno Fernandes. Where do I start. He has been argubly the signing of the season, contributing to 7 G/A in 8 starts. He has improved the whole team massively and has turned out to be a great signing by Ole.
The final point in Signings is of course Odion Ighalo. Ighalo came in from China in a controversial deal that was laughed at by many. Although he has not had much game time, he has impressed every time he played with 4 goals in 3 starts and had a brilliant 5 mins against Man City
Youth. Solskjaer has followed the old Man United traditions and give the youth a chance. He has given Debuts to Brandon Williams, Ethan Laird, Dylan Levitt, Di’shon Bernard, Ethan Galbraith, Largie Ramanzani, D’mani Bughail-Mellor and of Course starboy Mason Greenwood.
Mason Greenwood has been the success story of the season. He was given his debut by Ole against PSG in March and has been terrific ever since. He has scored 11 goals and got 4 assists in 19/20 and has been brilliant everytime he has played. Greenwood has also said
that Ole has been helpful to him, as a young striker, in his success so far this season. Also, this season United have the lowest average age of every team in the league with 24 years and 312 days. This has been down to Solskjaer putting his faith in young but experienced players
such as Martial, Rashford, Mctominay and Wan-Bissaka. He has also found two brand new regular first team players in Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams whilst having players knocking on the door such as James Garner and Axel Tuanzebe.
To conclude it all, I am very much so Ole in, but there is still room for improvement. One thing I would like to see Ole improve in is his management of injuries as he has overplayed too many players this season (if you would like more info on this read @Utd_Ryan_ pinned tweet)
