Day 23 of @NavigatorSurvey tracking poll: Most Americans oppose declaring the country open soon: 67% oppose and 27% support. And if and when we do open, the public overwhelmingly (91%) supports a cautious reopening, where a handful of businesses reopen but most things stay closed
The problem with a grand reopening without a plan to address the health problems is that most people won& #39;t comply. We asked what people would do if the country was "declared open in the next few weeks." The answer? 76% would "still spend almost all of my time in my home."
What would make people comfortable to resume normal activity? Tests, monitoring, masks and health experts saying it& #39;s OK. What wouldn& #39;t? A grand declaration from the President saying that we are open for business.
As a result, it& #39;s clear that the only way to restart the economy is to address the health crisis and the public overwhelmingly agrees. 69% say resolve health crisis to restart economy, while 22% say we need to start focusing on the economy.
If you want to speak to the public in a way that is resonant on this, you need to link health to reopening the country. Public health is how to fix the economy. That& #39;s where people are. When the Trump and GOP just talks economy, without addressing health, it is far less resonant.
Given the President& #39;s disregard for solving the health crisis, it& #39;s no surprise that the President& #39;s rating continue to decline. Trump& #39;s health care approval is severely under water. Over the last month we& #39;ve seen that rating go from -2 to -16.
Trump& #39;s "liberate" comments are totally rejected by the public. Trump can often rally his base to his position, but he& #39;s failing here. Only 13% support the protests and only 27% approve of his comments. 76% support the stay-at-home orders and 60% disapprove of Trump& #39;s comments.
And those "Fire Fauci" chants at the protests? Those saying that hold a totally fringe position in America as Dr. Fauci remains a trusted figure.
