At the @BritishRedCross destitution centre in Hackney this AM. Staff are still running food distributions - even more needed when some places have had to close
Food distributions operating with social distancing rules. People wait outside & enter one at a time
They are greeted by Carolina, who is giving out chocolate eggs for kids. It's her birthday today - happy birthday Carolina!
Carolina is an activities coordinator at the centre. Usually they hold classes like yoga, sewing, spoken word groups. They've moved some of the group's online so people can stay in touch. Today she is handing out activity sheets for people to do at home.
Some people can't make it as they're isolating, so @BritishRedCross are taking the food to them. Emmanuel, an emergency response volunteer is dropping off food to families
Ida from Independent Living is packing food crates too. For some people in the asylum system this is a lifeline - if you have no support, and have health problems, you could be even more vulnerable to the virus
Michael & Ida's car is loaded and ready to go
Next door's cat has come to investigate...
The centre also has a garden, run by the service users. Some peas, strawberries and onions on the go
About 70 people are expected today. All are in the asylum system but struggling to get support. Some are homeless. Some have kids. All are dealing with the virus on top of worries about their future, their family, their health.
