When I was a young fan, The Gunfighters was regarded as one of, if not the, worst story of the classic run. To my mind this was about its notoriously low ratings and a rather limited view from the elder statesmen of what constituted good Doctor Who.
In reality, it’s a delightfully fun comedy, with high stakes. A western parody playing out as farce. And I know some people hate the song, but the song bloody makes it. This story is all about counter-point.
Honestly, season 3 is a show swaggering with confidence and willing to experiment and be inventive. Mission to the Unknown, DMP, Myth Makers, the Massacre, the Ark, this. They’re all loopy in their own way. Gloriously so.
If you don’t think Dr Who has room for a comedy musical about a bloodbath, then I think you’re underestimating it.
