In our bid to advocate for mental health, we must be careful not to label everything a disorder. Merely feeling sad is not Depression. It’s a natural response to an unfavourable outcome. Being nervy or anxious about something is not an anxiety disorder.
Not being able to study doesn’t automatically imply learning disorder.
There are clear criteria for these.
I sat in a conversation last year and the trend was “I’m going to see my therapist”. It was almost as though if you didn’t have a therapist, you were the jon person. Mental health is real and the role of therapy/CBT is important. But let’s not stretch things.
It’s not a fashion trend to hop on. It’s a real clinical diagnosis. The same way we’d think of malaria and pneumonia, it’s a real diagnosis. when you are in the wrong and you’re confronted, don’t be quick to cry out “my mental health”. Man or Woman up and sort things out.
So we can actually give full attention to those who need help. Just like prank callers can put service providers off, choosing to play disorder has the tendency of making those who need real assistance to be ignored/treated not seriously.
