if you think young people should have hormones for imbalance or deficiency, but you don’t think they should have puberty blockers or hormone therapy, then your issue is not with children making choices, but with them becoming trans or refusing the injunction to binary
we often seem to take it as a given, but i think we need to call these claims out for what they are: a deep terror of any body that defies the hegemony of cisgender bodies, society’s idealisation and valuing of those bodies and those bodies alone
the people pushing back against hormone treatment for trans youth are so often willing to give kids (esp intersex ones) hormones to make sure they develop as close to the cisgender ideal as possible, or to improve fertility, so that they can be (re)productive heterosexual adults
the problem with normalisation is that just not that it sets up one body as the ideal, but that it does so in such a way that it cannot accept any other bodies as valid or valuable, because to do so would reveal the artifice of the norm, which is presented to us as a natural fact
what this means is that cisgender people are irresistibly drawn into a condemnation or refusal of the value (the beauty, or even the humanity of trans people) of trans bodies, because it is the only way to ensure and confirm the value of their own bodies, to justify the ideal
