There are some things which should not be run as profit-making businesses. Anything which is a vital part of the country's infrastructure. They do need to be efficient. But they are not there to provide profit to shareholders. The NHS is one, because the health of the (thread)
population should not be subject to this. Others are vital utilities - electric, water, gas, telephony, broadband, roads, rail, public transport. Local authorities. And education. Yet the government is refusing to bail out universities that are about to go bankrupt. (2/thread)
This is appalling. Whilst I am of the opinion that the higher education system is in dire need of reform in terms of the hierarchy of subjects - therefore contributing to the inequality in wages for key services - educating our young people is the future of our country (3/thread)
and refusing to help universities in financial need is clearly an intent to perpetuate the Eton/Oxbridge supremacy where only the wealthy thrive. We dont need more Bullingdon Boys, we need people who actually give a stuff about the whole country... (end/thread)
