Important but long thread part 2:

Just to clarify because @Telegraph didn’t do their research: under 18s don’t have access to transition related surgery in the UK so no, the government isn’t about to withdraw their access to it. (26/n)
Trans young people do currently have access to (reversible) hormone blockers once they’ve started puberty. Once they’ve been on puberty blockers for a year, 16 and 17 year olds do have access to cross sex hormones. (27/n)
In reality the wait for GIDS is 2+ years and there’s a long assessment process, so most trans children won’t access any aspect of medical transition and young people are typically well into puberty before they’re able to access blockers. (28/n)
However, whilst the waiting times leave a lot to be desired, this access to medical transition can be life saving - as we’ve already mentioned. The government is considering taking this away. (29/n)
Currently GIDS require parental consent to offer support to trans children and young people under 16. This isn’t in line with GMC guidelines, which state that under 16s can be treated if they are deemed able to consent.

(30/n)
If the law changes to deem trans children and young people under 18 unable consent to treatment from GIDs (or even unable to access any aspect of medical transition at all), the NHS and GMC may have to change their guidelines for the treatment and care of all under 18s. (31/n)
Currently under 16s are able to access the contraceptive pill. They’re able to do so without parental consent. Under 16s also able to have an abortion without parental consent. Changes to the law on young people’s access to healthcare could place this access under threat. (32/n)
These are just some of the aspects of NHS care that could be impacted by changing the law around children and young people’s access to transition related care and we’re sure there are many many more. (34/n)
So what can you do with all these #FactsAboutTrans? What can you do to #ProtectTransKids? Share the facts. Share the research. Write to your MP. Write to Liz Truss. Ask your trade union to speak out for #transrights. (35/n)
