Apparently, Anthony Fantano is trending because he gave the new Fiona Apple record a 7/10 and people are mad. I don't understand that. I think he's off-base, trying to evaluate the record as if it were a Tom Waits record or something, but it's not an unfair review.
This sounds like a defense of Fantano, but honestly, I don't have an opinion on his work in general. I don't watch it, save the occasional recommended click on YouTube, as I tend to like to find/assess things myself, but he's clearly a skilled critic with a good ear.
Pitchfork's 10/10 writeup was also a fair review. I'm a bit more in agreement with it. I thought it was the best record I've heard this year so far, and found myself giggling despite the subject matter because of how much I liked it. An easy 9.5/10 for me, if I had to rate it.
I guess the thesis of this thread is "be nice to media critics and also listen to that new Fiona Apple record."
