A second @YouGov poll*, commissioned by Crest, has found that over two thirds of the UK public continue to support the approach the police have taken to enforcing the #COVID19 lockdown.
2/

The survey* found that 36% of the public fully support the approach taken by the police while a further 33% also support the approach but think in some cases officers are going too far.

*3-5th April (n=1,646); 17-18th April (n=1,651)

This represents minimal change from a previous survey which found 42% full support and 32% support, though think in some cases officers go too far.
4/

The proportion of people who believe the police are too heavy-handed remains unchanged at 6% while the proportion of people who think the police should take tougher action has risen slightly from 14% to 16%.

The results also showed that:

➡️ Londoners are significantly more likely to qualify their support by thinking police have gone too far in some cases (42%) than people in the rest of the South (33%), in the Midlands and Wales (32%), in the North (29%) and in Scotland (32%).
6/

➡️ While full support among 18-24 year olds has fallen by 10 percentage points (35% to 25%) overall support among this age group has risen by 4 percentage points (52% to 56%).
7/

➡️ Overall support is more widespread among white people (70%) than BAME people (60%) although both groups are equally likely (16%) to believe the police should take tougher action.
8/

➡️ Women continue to be more likely to be fully supportive of the police (40%) than men (31%) and less likely to think they have gone too far in some cases (31% v. 35%).

"Chief constables and PCCs should take heart from these findings which appear to vindicate the current emphasis on encouraging compliance with the lockdown and using enforcement powers only as a last resort."
10/

"Maintaining this support the longer the lockdown continues may become challenging, however, and it remains important that policing continues to earn the public’s trust through positive messaging and open engagement with communities."
