My first CD player was a Sony Discman. My brother and I got one each when our stepdad cashed in some Marlboro Miles. I also got a telescope, but I’m going somewhere with the CD player thing... maybe.
We had this stereo system my stepdad had since he married my mom, which was when I was 8 I think. 9 at the latest. Anyways AM/FM, record player, cassette deck and an 8 track player. Big tower speakers with great sound. I ran my CD player through it when I could...
Age here was when my mom married my stepdad. Believe I was 15 when I got the CD player, definitely got CDs on my 16th birthday, so had to have been.
Anyways, my mom was actually awesome because here I am blaring tons of Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Metallica, noisy things that were not her style. And she just let me do it while she would cross stitch and such, just because I loved music so much and she knew it. I still do.
Now, stuff my mom found offensive, I couldn’t play through the stereo. At that age, she let me listen to wrist I wanted in my headphones, but she didn’t wanna hear it. She also hated the word fuck, couldn’t say it in our house, so that ruled a lot out too.
It was still awesome she let me rock out, and even as an angsty teen I was never aggravated about what I couldn’t play, I respected her not wanting to hear whatever she didn’t wanna hear. Meanwhile my friends moms were screaming turn that shit down at their houses...
Discman was dope because you could use adapter or batteries. I’d plug it up for the stereo or even in bed with my headphones, batteries when I was up and about. Also had the car cassette and lighter adapter for it. I was the coolest mofo in my friends moms car.
Once I got my first car, though, I was big in to having and installing car stereo systems, so with the upgraded head unit there, the Discman became exclusively for at home and was my main for about 4 years before I got a stereo with the 5 disc changer

Now I’ll just ramble in this thread because I’m high.
I’m 42, I’m due for a midlife crisis. What if when I settle my case on my brain injury, I dropped a crazy system in the van? We will be getting a new family vehicle then, it’ll just be my little commuter/winter beater.

Like, it’d be the saddest thing, but in the context of a midlife crisis, it’s not that bad, right?
I’m not actually going to do this.
