People become informed of symptoms and realize they are not alone. I will be posting polls which remain anonymous along with tips and resources you can use if you are affected by Generalized Anxiety Disorder or hope to become informed.
I chose to discuss Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) because people often self-diagnosis without fully understanding the symptoms. It’s important to shed light on the facts of this disease to understand how relationships are impacted.
Someone who may show symptoms of GAD experience the following:
-excessive worry or anxiety (they can worry about normal things but the AMOUNT or WAY they worry is what’s damaging)
-restlessness, or feeling on edge
-easily fatigued
-irritability

-irritability
-muscle tensions
-sleep disturbances
-occurs more days than not for 6 months
*in order to receive a diagnosis symptoms must interfere with daily functioning*

A partner diagnosed with GAD can create tensions within the relationship as the non-anxious partner may under-benefit in the relationship. The anxious partner often feels guilty or unworthy of love where the non-anxious partner may form resentment.
The non-anxious partner spends more time reassuring their anxious partner leading them to feel a lack of reciprocation or as though they must “walk on eggshells” with their anxious partner.
The great thing is GAD can be managed with a variety of treatments and multiple families and people are managing this mental illness successfully. Please share with others who may benefit and aid in reducing stigma.
