Short thread: Bleeding Heartland& #39;s #Iowa #wildflowers series will return in May, but if you are out in wooded areas, you will see many flowers blooming.
Spring beauty is common--flowers are closed in the early morning and evening. https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2013/05/15/iowa-wildflower-wednesday-spring-beauty/">https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2013/05/1...

Mayapples probably are not blooming yet in most of #Iowa, but you can see the leaves that give these #wildflowers their other common name (umbrella plant): https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2019/06/05/iowa-wildflower-wednesday-mayapple-umbrella-plant/">https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2019/06/0...
I call these #wildflowers dogtooth violets, but most people seem to prefer the other common name, trout lily. They are blooming in many #Iowa wooded areas now. https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2017/04/26/iowa-wildflower-wednesday-dogtooth-violet-white-trout-lily/">https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2017/04/2...
You& #39;ve probably missed Dutchman& #39;s breeches, but there might be some latecomers still blooming in parts of #Iowa. https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2015/04/15/iowa-wildflower-wednesday-returns-dutchmans-breeches/">https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2015/04/1...
Virginia bluebells are just starting to bloom in my part of central #Iowa. These are among the easiest spring #wildflowers to identify. https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2014/04/23/iowa-wildflower-wednesday-returns-virginia-bluebells/">https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2014/04/2...
Toothwort is also starting to bloom in the same kind of woodland habitats where you will find spring beauty: #Iowa #wildflowers https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2013/05/08/iowa-wildflower-wednesday-toothwort/">https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2013/05/0...
Violets are also blooming now. Most often in #Iowa, you& #39;ll see the common blue violet (a variation of this species has white flowers): https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2014/05/21/iowa-wildflower-wednesday-violets/">https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2014/05/2...
Striped white or striped cream violets are also starting to bloom now. You won& #39;t see them as often as the common blue violets: #Iowa #wildflowers https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2016/04/20/iowa-wildflower-wednesday-striped-cream-violet-striped-white-violet/">https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2016/04/2...
Finally, if you are lucky you will see downy yellow violets. I get excited at the first sight of them every spring. #Iowa #wildflowers (end thread) https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2017/04/19/iowa-wildflower-wednesday-returns-downy-yellow-violet/">https://www.bleedingheartland.com/2017/04/1...
