okay imma need neurotypical people to stop using the term "hyperfixation" bc the thing you enjoy a lot or are "obsessed" with are not hyperfixations. you just REALLY like that thing. hyperfixations take over your life and can actually be really fucking bad.
my experience with hyperfixations is the following:
can't stop talking about it. thinking about it constantly. wanting to make nonstop content for them and doing just that. can't get off sns bc i need to see the thing. lack of sleep bc i'm to busy consuming the shit. it's hell.
when i'm with others, i'm thinking about it. i constantly resist talking about it bc if i start then i wont stop and i become BOTHERED if the subject changes or someone stops me. it's all consuming. it makes shit rly rly difficult to handle.
there's liking something A LOT and then there's shaping your life around that thing and nothing else. it fucks shit up. it rly does. gets in the way of sleep, your job, school, homework, studying.... it's so hard to deal with tbh. it's hard.
this is mostly present with people who have ADHD or/and autism. there are other disabilities/neurodivergent conditions that have hyperfixations as symptoms, but ADHD and autism are the most prevalent. ask anyone with either or those about hyperfixations. They Have One.
if you're neurotypical, don't use it. being mentally ill is NOT the same thing as being neurodivergent. someone can be mentally ill and neurotypical. hyperfixations are a neurodivergent thing ONLY.
