Deregulated river ports were the backbone early Thai modernisation. While the markets thrive, mafias and gangs prospered. Suphanburi was probably one of the most famous hubs for thieves, it is said that being assigned governor at Suphanburi meant a death sentence for officials.
Ayutthaya left Suphanburi administration to Persian court officials during the 16th and 17th century. It was a haven for orchard production and trade from Mataban. Its amazing how angry spirits can give cities so much historical autonomy.
Up until 1892, the city was off limits for all members of the royal family. Locals believed the city god hated royals, due to a broken promise by clans who established Ayutthaya as a political hegemony. Any members of the royal family who dared venture into the city will go mad.
Prince Damrong broke the curse by arguing that for any spirit to ascend to city god, they must be of good natured. Since his visit was well intended the spirits should not attack him. He did observe that locals had more affinity towards spirit worship than any other places.
