My interpretation of she — a thread no one asked for
At first glance this song seems to be about a man who is attracted to this sort of female person but she isn’t as flat as that narrative
The song is obviously a man. The pronoun he/him are heavily used through the story. “He takes a boat out,” “The man,” “He’s thinking of you” “His assistant” etc
The beginning of she starts off with the man living his daily life. He has a regular job. He takes care of his children. It’s to show how he portrays himself to others.
But as moves with his life, this sort of figure in his mind overtakes his life and thoughts.
“Imagines just sailing away” is saying he imagines how it would be like to be himself. “She lives in daydreams with me” further proves this. It’s not a physically person rather someone/something that is ‘in his head’.
He wants to tell his friends and close ones but he’s scared of being judged. “And not telling his mates, he wouldn't know what to say” he doesn’t know how to explain this “female figure” that is in his mind to others.
I feel the female figure to be some sort of angel or sprit. I have no lyrics prove for my reasoning. ‘She’ is guiding him into embracing who he truly is.
The female is further emphasized to be figurative with the lyric “A woman who’s just in his head”
“And she sleeps in his bed, while he plays pretend” is to say this female sprit is with him always but he tries to ignore it. He doesn’t want to knowledge it.
So overall the song is about a regular man with an imaginary person in his head that leads him to find his true self
It’s not a perfect explaination but if you look further into the lyrics you will see she is not as simple as “love” story (it’s not really even that but I don’t know how to explain it)
I realize not everyone will interpret she as I do but I hope you can understand my perspective :)
I just realized how long this thread is so I don’t really expect anyone to read it completely
