Tonight over 120 people are joining us for a virtual workshop from @farrahsafiakhan on self-care in this time of great stress. To start, Farrah is reminding us that self-care is political and we need to take care of ourselves so we can keep doing our work.
For those who couldn& #39;t join us tonight, check out this great reading recommendation from @farrahsafiakhan - A Burst of Light by Audre Lorde, a seminal work on self-care.
What does self care have to do with social justice and our work? @farrahsafiakhan makes it clear that self care is not only what gives us the energy to campaign, but it’s also about fighting for systemic change so people can take care.
We& #39;re reminded that in this moment a big feeling is going to be grieving. The world has felt on fire for so long. @farrahsafiakhan encourages us to give ourselves permission for that grief, make rituals for it, and not try hide it.
Some great tools from @farrahsafiakhan on how to care for ourselves - box breathing, checking in with our bodies, eating, keeping moving, resting. Farrah walked us through this box breathing exercise

Creating a self-care plan is all about making time, deciding what practices help us, and who we can connect with for support.
Real talk - self care means digital hygiene aka setting boundaries for ourselves around social media (

Making an emergency self-care list is a way to prepare for when things become really overwhelming, says @farrahsafiakhan. Having something you love to hear, smell, taste, touch or see can help ground you in difficult moments.
A lot of the lessons tonight are about caring for ourselves in our personal spaces, but it& #39;s also about taking care at work. Tonight @farrahsafiakhan also shared care based approaches to remote working. See Farrah’s slides here
