Been thinking about opening a cafe for a while. But ownership structure has always been a stumbling block for me. My prevailing idea was to own the business and commit to wage transparency and the development of a union. But worker owned co-ops recently came onto my radar...
Talking to my partner during our family quarantine nature walk: “It does not necessarily follow that ownership of fabric and a sowing machine is or ought to be the same as ownership of a group of people making t-shirts with fabric and sowing machines.”
We are conditioned to just take capitalist ownership as a given framework for organizations to make decisions. All the while, if someone proposed that very same structure for governance it would basically be authoritarianism.
