During Easter, 1963, Port Macquarie celebrated its ninth annual Carnival of the Pines. This picture is of the Oxley County Council's winning float for 1963, which paraded along Clarence and Horton Streets. In the background are the Pine Trees that give their name to the carnival.
And here is an example from 1965.
Period of usage: 22 March - 10 April 1965.
This 1965 green felt banner depicting pine trees and girls in bikinis (one popping out of an Easter Egg!), was awarded to the Hastings Historical Society (now Port Macquarie Historical Society) for best historical float. They were one of 34 floats in the parade that year.
Port Macquarie is ~390 km N of Sydney, and was named after the Governor of NSW, Lachlan Macquarie. In 1821, it was founded as a penal settlement, replacing Newcastle as the destination for convicts committing secondary crimes in NSW. The penal settlement lasted until 1830.
