I am so, so far behind on tweeting my posts, so here’s a string of them:
1. What I read / listened to in fall: Death and the Harlot by Georgina Clarke (DNF), The Devil Your Know by Sophia Holloway (DNF), PS I Still Love You by Jenny Han (a strong B; good but not great like To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before) https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/dnf-reviews/reading-list-by-janine-for-fall-2019/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi... #bkbrk #amreading
2. Dark Season by Joanna Lowell (C+). https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-c-reviews/c-plus-reviews/review-dark-season-by-joanna-lowell/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi... #bkbrk #amreading
3. You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle (B+). Romcom with a great concept. A little frenetic but good. #bkbrk #amreading
4. The Threefold Tie by Aster Glenn Gray. A-. Marvelous novella about turning a triangle into a threesome. Why isn’t this author better known? This one is a hidden gem. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-a-reviews/a-minus-reviews/review-the-threefold-tie-by-aster-glenn-gray/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi... #bkbrk #amreading
Oops, forgot to include the link to my post on Sarah Hogle’s You Deserve Each Other: https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-b-reviews/b-plus-reviews/review-you-deserve-each-other-by-sarah-hogle-2/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
6. I can’t remember if I tweeted this before, but Jennie and I reviewed The Glass Hotel, Emily St. John Mandel’s follow up to Station Eleven, some weeks ago. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-b-reviews/b-plus-reviews/review-the-glass-hotel-by-emily-st-john-mandel/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
7. More recently, I did a reading list post on The Rook (O’Malley), Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City (Parker), and Putney’s classic One Perfect Rose. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-a-reviews/a-minus-reviews/what-janine-is-reading-in-winter-2020/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
8. And this past week I did a roundup post on Mary Balogh’s Huxtable series. My grades for them were all over the map: https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/dnf-reviews/what-janine-is-reading-huxtables-edition/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
9. I was disappointed by Robert Jackson Bennett’s follow up to Foundryside, Shorefall— a shame because Foundryside was my second favorite novel of 2018. My joint review with Sirius: https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-c-reviews/c-plus-reviews/review-shorefall-by-robert-jackson-bennett/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
I haven’t updated this thread with more recent reviews since May so here goes:
I liked Rebecca Roanhorse’s first book, Trail of Lightning. Book two, Storm of Locusts, was a lot less effective for me and I didn’t finish it. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/dnf-reviews/review-storm-of-locusts-by-rebecca-roanhorse/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
11. (The last was 10) Beach Read by Emily Henry was a big disappointment. No chemistry and a host of other problems. Why we should care about the heroine’s dead father and his affair I have no idea. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-c-reviews/c-minus-reviews/review-beach-read-by-emily-henry-2/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
12. I loved Frances Hodgson Burnett’s children’s classic, The Secret Garden, as a kid, but when I reread it, it was another C-/D. Wow, this book is racist. So, so racist. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-c-reviews/c-minus-reviews/review-the-secret-garden-by-frances-hodgson-burnett/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
13. I reviewed Nalini Singh’s Alpha Night jointly with DA Jennie, and she liked it better than I did. For me it was just okay. Kind of bland. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-b-reviews/b-minus-reviews/joint-review-alpha-night-by-nalini-singh/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
14. Something to Talk About by Mary Wilsner was a lot of fun. I wanted more setting and minor character development but there Was great chemistry between the two heroines. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-b-reviews/b-minus-reviews/review-something-to-talk-about-by-meryl-wilsner/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
15. My June “What Janine is Reading” post was a mixed bag of books by Jane Austen / Rosamund Pike, Lisa Berne and L.M. Montgomery ranging from A- to DNF. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/dnf-reviews/what-janine-is-reading-and-listening-to-this-and-that/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
16. In early July, I reviewed the first book in a newish mystery series by Allison Montclair, The Right Sort of Man. 1946 London w/ two friends running a marriage bureau. Great banter and nice detail about post-war life. A B/B+. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-b-reviews/b-plus-reviews/review-the-right-sort-of-man-by-allison-montclair/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
17. The Angel of the Crows by Katherine Addison was good but not amazing like The Goblin Emperor. It borrows heavily from Arthur Conan Doyle. I gave it a B because I liked the characters and their kindness, compassion and friendship so much. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/review-the-angel-of-the-crows-by-katherine-addison/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
18. After loving Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s Gods of Jade and Shadow and liking Untamed Shore, Mexican Gothic was a disappointment. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t very scary either. Loved Noemi but Francis was too wan. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-c-reviews/c-plus-reviews/review-mexian-gothic-by-silvia-moreno-garcia/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
19. The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett—awful. Triggers: horrific graphic rape, torture, violence. Lingering villain POV. A big, fat DNF. Still in search of an explanation of how such a horrible book could be a massive bestseller. Share your insights! https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/dnf-reviews/review-the-pillars-of-the-earth-by-ken-follett/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
20. Silver Lining by Maggie Osborne. 2000 romance that wasn’t very romantic, but a great character study. Heroine with a ton of grit. Didn’t love it but worth reading. B-. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-b-reviews/b-minus-reviews/review-silver-lining-by-maggie-osborne/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
21. Monday’s Not Coming by Tiffany D. Jackson. Very good book about a young girl’s search for her missing friend. Lovely characters, great story tension, but the twist near the end was gimmicky. B/B+—recommended. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-b-reviews/b-plus-reviews/review-mondays-not-coming-by-tiffany-d-jackson/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
22. Allison Montclair‘s follow up to The Right Sort of Man, A Royal Affair, was not nearly as good as the first. Still great banter, friendship, period detail, but too much silliness at the end and I hated seeing still-living royals used as characters. They are still alive!
22 cont. Not fair game IMO. Anyway, I gave it a C+ in a joint review with DA Jayne. It was a C for her. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-c-reviews/c-plus-reviews/joint-review-a-royal-affair-by-allison-montclair/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
Cara Bastone’s Just a Heartbeat Away gave me the warm fuzzies, but it also read as a bit too sweet. I gave it a C because I had multiple issues but I still might read the sequel. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-c-reviews/c-reviews/review-just-a-heartbeat-away-by-cara-bastone/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
24. I thought Beth O’Leary’s The Switch was a disappointment after her debut novel, The Flatshare, but Jennie liked it much better than me. Read our dueling review here: https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-b-reviews/b-plus-reviews/review-the-switch-by-beth-oleary/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
25. Someone to Romance / Balogh— @kaetrin67 and I have a “dueling” review of this one. She liked it much, much better than I did. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-a-reviews/a-minus-reviews/dueling-review-someone-to-romance-by-mary-balogh/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
26. I also reviewed Emerald Blaze by Ilona Andrews. Well, it was more a discussion than a review, we had a lot of fun. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-b-reviews/b-plus-reviews/joint-review-emerald-blaze-by-ilona-andrews/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
27. Most recently, I reviewed Kathleen Gilles Seidel’s The Last Snowfall. I love some of her older books but this one was disappointing. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-c-reviews/c-minus-reviews/review-the-last-snowfall-by-kathleen-gilles-seidel/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
28. My review of Pretty Pretty Boys by Gregory Ashe, 1st book in a gay mystery series. I’m befuddled by my response—the mystery doesn’t hang together so I graded it a C+/B- but the romance is terrific. I knew when I finished that I’d read the whole series. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-b-reviews/b-minus-reviews/review-pretty-pretty-boys-by-gregory-ashe/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
29. Recently I reviewed Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson. The topic is much needed (an R. Kelly kind of situation) but I didn’t like Grown as much as her earlier book, Monday’s Not Coming. You can find my review of MNC in this thread. Here’s my review of Grown: https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-c-reviews/c-reviews/review-grown-by-tiffany-d-jackson/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
30. Transposition by Gregory Ashe, an M/M mystery with rom elements, #2 in his Hazard & Somerset series was a C- but I’m obsessed with the romance in this series. The other four H&S books I’ve read are all stronger than this one. https://dearauthor.com/book-reviews/overall-c-reviews/c-minus-reviews/review-transposition-by-gregory-ashe/">https://dearauthor.com/book-revi...
