I’ve happily cut off many white people as friends who do NOT fully UNDERSTAND BAME presence in the U.K. let alone London. And if you do not get BAME empowering and awarness then start now.

The structures of BAME dependency in this country reach into the NHS and everyone needs https://twitter.com/shiromi_/status/1253099377247297537
To understand the pressure BAME communities have without being recognised and understood at a core level of disrespect and passive judgement. It is a privilege to not “understand why BAME is important” and a dangerous privilege at that.
BAME communities suffer from the ignorance of thousands of white people who could be allies and activists, who could use their privilege to support and equalise the lack of acknowledgement BAME suffer from.
The sadness behind the majority of covid related NHS deaths is that it’s showing BAME dependence - yes literally and practically - but also showing protective measures are not being positively mapped against the dependence for BAME staff.

There is a nasty rhetoric in this-
-country that BAME must earn and prove themselves and their place/ right in the U.K. under the watch of the mediocre, passive privileged white gaze. Do not even @ on this. If you do your reading you will KNOW what I am talking about. But at what cost do BAME nhs staff need to
Risk themselves? And for why exactly? And are those clapping at 8pm mourning the talented and committed black and brown staff who are dying for their passive picket fence clapping? If this is too strong for you, you probably are the problem.

BAME is only appreciated when it-
-fits a white structure and narrative and i am grateful for the fact I associate only with compassionate and supportive white people. Those that let BAME have their voice as loud as it needs to be. I feel terrible to know that there are citizens in this country who STILL-
- TURN A BLIND EYE TO BAME DEATHS. Who still disregard BAME deaths and loss, because their white identity “can’t relate or identify with it fully”.
And don’t get me wrong, I understand structures of BAME opportunity too: e.g. many Asian (especially south Asian) families have resources/ educations that permit immigration&NHS suitable qualifications. It is a privilege to practice&study, but it is not a privilege to die for it
I am tired of white people not commenting about BAME deaths with throws of support and compassion. I am tired of white people being quite silent and drawing the curtains. I’m tired of white people NOT SHARING THEIR VOICES on this - do you know why white people don’t share it?
White people do not share their voice on BAME DEATHS because they do not know enough.

Why do they not know enough? Because they choose not to learn, see, read and stand by BAME awareness.

It is a choice. And I want to see white people REALLY take effort to read and learn now
we all have more spare time. Read up on how you can support and understand the disproportionate BAME structures more. If you’re friends with, married to or in a relationship with a BAME individual, you need to fucking know some basics.

There’s not a compromise on this.
BAME needs white allies and the rising number of deaths due to covid shows this. It is so easy for white people to support us and yet nhs talent dies serving a country majority in sitting quiet and passive about blanket racism.
Blanket racism = choosing ignorance toward racial equality and understanding.

Imagine pulling a blanket over your eyes. That.
This is something I’ve championed for years and years, written thesis papers on, and argued over and cut off friends for. (Shout out the blonde white girls who said being white in London amongst immigrants (aka gentrification) makes them the new minority lol) ——
—— these were degree educated girls too. There is work to be done. There is awareness to be made.

This is 100% more important than being a feminist right now (you can be both but only if you do both well) in case you are a white person feeling like you’re about to make an excuse
And we ALL know the TYPE of white person this thread refers to. If you have an inkling or a feeling or a slight identifiable twinge, check yourself; free to dm me with where to start or what to read or where to find knowledge.

Let’s all do fucking better for the BAME community
