It’s clear a lot of us don’t know about or don’t even consider the possibility of learning disabilities. It’s not just something we see in movies so I’ve tried to compile a few details but please research some more on your own.

Learning disability: A childhood disorder characterized by difficulty with certain skills like reading or writing, in people with normal intelligence. It affects the ability to interpret what one sees/hears or the ability to link information from different parts of the brain. 1/

Learning disabilities are due to genetic and/or neurobiological factors that alter brain functioning in a way that affects one or more learning related cognitive processes related. 2/

1. Dyscalculia affects a person’s ability to understand numbers and learn math facts. They may also have poor comprehension of math symbols, struggle with memorizing and organizing numbers, have difficulty telling time, or have trouble with counting.

2. Dyslexia affects reading and related language-based processing skills. The severity can differ in each individual but can affect reading fluency, decoding, reading comprehension, recall, writing, spelling, and sometimes speech and can exist along with other related disorders.

3. Dysgraphia affects a person’s handwriting ability and fine motor skills. Problems may include illegible handwriting, inconsistent spacing, poor spatial planning on paper, poor spelling, and difficulty composing writing, and also thinking and writing at the same time.

4. ADHD is not considered a learning disability, but research shows that 30-50 percent of children also have a specific learning disability, and that the two conditions can interact to make learning very challenging. 1/

4.2. ADHD is a disorder that includes difficulty staying focused and paying attention, difficulty controlling behavior and hyperactivity.

There are others and I encourage every parent, educator or child care worker to at least be aware and learn the signs.
