I wholly disapprove of what you say but will defend to the death your right to say it - Evelyn Beatrice Hall

This Voltairian principle is the ultimate taqqiya by the left. It is bandied about while camouflaging secessionism or naxalism as legitimate "dissent".

Time has consistently proven that the left is and has been, far more draconian when in a position of power. The call for dissent when in minority quickly becomes the stomp for silence when in majority.
The liberalism of the left is just a convenient coalition, to be dropped at the slightest hint of power. This hypocrisy is consistently mindboggling. Apart from politics, one can see the illiberalism of the "liberals" across sectors.
From University spaces, intellectual circles, lawyers groups or any other smaller community unit where they enjoy a "majority", any contrary view is censored, derided & ridiculed. These little "liberal" republics actually sophistically practice the fascism they accuse others of.
The idea of free speech therefore, is sought to be protected only till it furthers the world view that a particular clique cherishes. The idea of 'free speech' surreptitiously changes colours to 'hate speech' when anyone expresses a different view.
While the call for partition of the country or the call for disintegration of the country is defended at the altar of free speech, the call by a politician to clear an illegal road blockade becomes hate speech.
Another key aspect in this quagmire, is the intersectionality of the left. The tent of the left has managed to cobble up numerous seemingly ideologically opposite groups. This provides enough diversity to create confusion at opportune moments.
Eg: The famous historian filing a case for Maoists, the death penalty abolitionists defending Yakub Menon, the feminist arguing that hijab is a matter of choice - the list of these intersectionality confusions is endless.
Such groups also practice a strategic silence so that group unity is not hampered.
Like the free speech enthusiast is mum on Charlie Hebdo & Kamlesh Tiwari, the feminist is mum on Burkha, the lynching brigade is mum on100s of incidents where identity of the victim is different.
When this bunch of overexcited "activists", who don't miss a single opportunity to pass sermons on liberalism when events suit a particular narrative, practice such planned silence in wake of other events, it is hard to deny that this liberalism is dishonest.
This version of the liberalism, is mere pretense. A pretense for affirmation in these little republics, a tool to mislead youth when not in power and a weapon to protect intra-left groups who commit violence.

Silence of activists here is not just hypocrisy, it is tacit approval.
It is foolish for independent thinkers to expect such people to be fair and to react to events irrespective of ideological differences.

Unless the other side doesn't create its own intersectionality, its own friendly groups to strategically operate for each other, it is doomed.
