If you ever wanted an example of how media and football have changed in the last 33 years, here was the Dundee Courier front page on April 23rd 1987.
That was the morning after Dundee United had defeated Borussia Mönchengladbach in Germany to reach the UEFA Cup Final.

That evening I didnât watch the whole game. For most of the first half I was far too busy playing football against the back of Baxter Park pavilion with two pals.
I donât know what I was thinking either.
I ran home and caught the end of the half - and Fergieâs goal.

Less than a year earlier, Iain Ferguson had viewed my parentsâ flat in Baxter Park Tce when it was for sale...
...and they sent me out to the park so I never met him. But maybe if I had, he wouldnât have nodded in at the back post that night in Germany.
Right?

Here are the pages from within that Courier.
âSinging from The Phoenix, Nethergate, could be heard someone distance up the road and inside there was wild excitement.â

âJust look at the place. People on their friendsâ shoulders, the pictures knocked squint on the wall and the whole pub singing âHere We Go.â What a night!â

I mustâve looked at these photos a thousand times. No internet back then. I didnât have any other newspapers to pore over. It was only this Courier. And I still love these photos 33 years later.

Look at the Bannon/Holt pic then remember Holtâs interview on @dodefoxpodcast and how chilled he was about big games.
âYeah, it was good.â
He dominated in a Euro semi vs a team whoâd never lost in Europe in their own stadium.
Iâd be dining out on that fact alone forever.

On Ian Redford:
âHe played in midfield, and at the back, and as a wide player, and as a striker. He was back, he was forward. It was a piston-like performance seldom equalled by what used to be called a wing-half.â

This was one of the greatest nights in not only Dundee Unitedâs history, but in Scottish football.
In 86/87, Unitedâs average home crowd was 11,285*.
Itâs impossible to imagine a club of Unitedâs size ever making such an impact ever again.
