Thing is, you can do this without going to school, too.
School can buy you:
1 Theory - how adv'sing works
2 History - before you
3 Feedback - live tweaks
4 Gang - to share careers
5 Mentors - and door-openers
6 Culture - a taste of work
7 Intros - recruiting days, meetings
8 Logo - Look!
9 Rank - if you place well
10 Structure
But you can access many of these in other ways.

The main thing is a body of work.
If you want to write, write.
If you want to do strategy, do research.
If you want to work with ideas, have ideas.

Work from public briefs or make them up.
Network and cross your fingers.
Regardless or not of whether these people went to ad school, much of their public presence is part of their body of work:
