Philanthropic interest in education is not a new phenomenon.

Crises in public ed before Covid are crisis due to capitalism.
Conflicting desires: communities vs big business.
Public schools can produce workers, generate profit, social control, nationalism

But also: communities have always used schools as sites of resistance!!

Immediate concerns- what harms are kids experiencing and trying to deal with while they’re also being expected to learn?
Au: Losing community is major and it impacts us in huge ways. Worried about how students (as HUMANS, not just academics) will come out of this.
Au: We have a moment to rethink all of that. (i.e. testing, what school is for, what's important to learn, having recess time)
