First note: this is all just how I learn, everyone does it differently so if this doesn’t work for you, don’t get discouraged! I’ve been studying languages for years and it’s taken a very long time for me to figure out what works for me so keep trying!!
Second note: I really hate learning digitally. I’m not a fan of apps (mostly) or reading stuff online. I really prefer having stuff either printed or physical books
Third note: I’ve been studying Korean since 2015 but I am nowhere near fluent. Korean is one of the hardest languages for English speakers to learn and within these 5 years I’ve had long periods where I completely stopped studying and forgot what feels like everything https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😭" title="Loudly crying face" aria-label="Emoji: Loudly crying face">
Fourth note: if you can take immersion lessons I 10000% recommend it. I had a private tutor for parts of 2016-2017 and we only spoke in Korean. Never before have I been so fast at picking up a language. Completely immersing yourself is the number 1 way to learn (for me at least)
한글 마스터 (Hangul Master) is the book I used to learn to read Korean. I had all of the characters memorized in a day. If you’re brand new to learning Korean you NEED to learn 한글. You can’t rely on romanization. To be honest I can’t even read most of the stuff people+
Write on here that’s using romanized letters. This book tells you how to pronounce each sound and gives you tons of writing practice (shout out to baby Jess’ terrible handwriting lol). It has Korean written in multiple fonts so you can lean to differentiate writing styles too
Next thing you need is some kind of textbook. Since I had a private tutor early on I got access to 서강 한국어 (Sogang Korean)textbooks so that’s what I’m used to using. But I wouldn’t really recommend them unless you have previous experience studying Korean because there’s not+
A lot of instruction. It’s meant to follow along with a teacher/classroom setting. The thing I do love them for is they always come with a vocal book so they give you tons of new words to learn, which leads me on to my next set of books~
The best beginner resource is probably talk to me in korean (ttmik). You can view lessons online for free or they have physical books as well. Their lessons are super easy to learn and they also don’t lean on romanization for teaching either. The only reason I don’t use these as+
My main books is because I find they lack vocab. I really like vocab lists because that’s my weak point so if you use these I’d 100% recommend getting a separate vocab book to supplement your learning. Or get the 500 words book ttmik has to get you started!
Next! Since I’m not taking lessons anymore and I’ve graduated college so I’m not planning on taking a language course, I make myself quizzes! My old teacher would give me mini exams/worksheets and if you can say make some at the beginning of the lesson, come back a week or so+
Later and try to remember what you learned! Don’t take them right away tho or it’s not a real test of your memory! And make sure to include questions were you have to both translate Korean and write your own sentences in Korean!
Once I was decent at reading Korean, I went on the hunt for easy books to read/translate. Some I got in Korea, some I’ve bought off eBay and I’ve even found some at my local used bookstore. I’d take it page by page and write down the words I didn’t know until I can read the+
Whole sentence. Also read out loud! I’d read a sentence 50 times to get comfortable saying it, especially when it’s a more complicated sentence
That’s pretty much everything I use for physical resources right now... on to digital https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😬" title="Grimacing face" aria-label="Emoji: Grimacing face">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😬" title="Grimacing face" aria-label="Emoji: Grimacing face">
The only study app I use is Quizlet and I did pay for their pro membership so I can upload as much as I want. This is how I study my vocab~ I try to focus only on the picture and korean word, not the English because when learning you need to create that memory in your head that+
That object has a completely new name. You don’t see an apple as an “apple” it’s now “사과”. If quizlet would let me just have a picture with no words I would but I’m pretty sure they make you put text. It also lets you flip the deck so you can see the korean word and try
To recall the image/English word. There’s also tests you can do and games if you use the desktop version
The only other app I use is hellotalk which is basically like a Facebook but you interact with people that speak the language you want to learn. You can do voice/video calls and basically get a snippet of people’s lives+
People will also upload sound clips so you can listen to them speak. To really learn you need to be able to speak to people not just read out of textbooks etc. you need to actually talk out loud and form your own sentences https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="☺️" title="Smiling face" aria-label="Emoji: Smiling face">
Of course with any social app there are delulu’s and creepy people so always stay cautious, don’t give out personal info etc but in general this app is helpful in connecting you to Koreans when you might not live in an area with a large Korean population, like myself
Lastly, I of course also watch a ton of dramas/YouTube vlogs etc to get more listening practice. And twitter for reading Korean and talking to sellers does help as well. Basically any exposure you can get to korean is good. Even going to a local Korean restaurant and trying+
To order in korean is good practice if you do have a restaurant near you. From my own experience, Korean speakers get super excited when you tell them you’re trying to learn and will ask all kinds of questions about it etc they’re usually willing to help if they can if you don’t+
Understand something https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="☺️" title="Smiling face" aria-label="Emoji: Smiling face"> but that concludes my thread. That’s everything I use but if you have any questions or need advice please feel free to reach out, I’ll help the best I can https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="☺️" title="Smiling face" aria-label="Emoji: Smiling face">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="☺️" title="Smiling face" aria-label="Emoji: Smiling face">
