If you ever doubt how much path-dependence there is in medicine, the appropriate doses for quinine were based on cinchona decoctions in the Schedula Romana published in *1651*, and weren't changed until the 1970s.
The dose, if you're curious, was 2 drachms (1.77 gm) of the finely powdered bark dissolved in wine immediately before a paroxysm.

Quinine comes in 324 mg (5 grain) capsules, just like APAP, and the loading dose was 1950 mg (6 caps) until the 1970s
