This further convinces McNeill that the 1916 rising should not go ahead and so he sends O'Rahilly to Cork and Kerry to spread the word that the rising was called off.
The next day Easter Sunday - McNeill publishes a short reminder ordering volunteers not to venture to Dublin
However between 1,250 -2,000 that did make their way for the rising were members of the Irish Citizens Army, Cumann na mban, among them Countess Markievch who was raging with McNeill

1000s of copies of the proclamation are printed and pasted onto walls and poles across Dublin city, people read them excitedly with some ironically enquiring if it was an upcoming play at the Abbey Theatre, Markievch was asked if she was acting in the play

Padraig Pearse reads out the proclamation and declares Ireland a Republic on behalf of the ' Provisional Government ' to a bewildered confused crowd of a few hundred people who were unsure what was going on. Who was he, what did his uniform represent and what is he reading
When people began to understand - the rising was met with general bemusement, thousands of Dubliners had relatives fighting for the British in Europe, most oppose the rising, some actually stone the rebels.

With many British soldier's at the Irish Grand National, Dublin Castle the centre of British administration in Ireland lay practically empty, actor Sean Connolly and radical feminist Helena Maloney set out to take the castle, they were met by sergeant James O'Brien
Who the fatally shot outside the gate O'Brien became the first casualty of the rising, Sean Connolly is shot and killed

The failure of the rebels to successfully take over the telephone exchange means that the lines of communication remain open from Dublin to London

Rebels occupy the Imperial and Metropole Hotels near the GPO, plus parts of Henry Street, Marital law is declared by the British
Looting is widespread and symbolised how normal law and order was in chaos now
British Prime minister Asquith is slow to respond
However the British response does come - it is with military might, what awaits on Day 3 for Pearse Connolly and the Irish rebels of 1916 as the fight against British rule in Ireland continues
Whilst waiting on Day 3 the history of British occupation and oppression must of playing within the minds of these rebels holed up in the GPO

British troops arrive at Kingstown ( Dún Laoghaire ) including two troops of Sherwood foresters ( they were so young and inexperienced they had to be shown how to load guns when they arrived at the pier ) they were cheered on arrival

Food supplies in Dublin run low. A British gunboat, the Helga, shells rebels at Liberty Hall and the building is later captured by the British

British troops in the Gresham Hotel fire on the GPO and the streets turn to rubble under artillery fire

Rebels at 25 Northumberland road, the Schoolhouse and Clanwilliam House ambush the Sherwood foresters, a small amount of rebels manage to inflict 234 casualties around Mount Street bridge

Dublin Fusiliers capture the Mendacity Institute and lay siege to the Four Courts
Sean Heuston with 30 rebels hold out against an estimated 400 British forces blocking their progress from Kingsbridge to Four Courts, eventually run out of ammunition, with the threat of being over-run, Heuston decides to surrender, the first rebels to surrender their position
