always boggles my mind that the first earth day fifty years ago had over 20 million participants (and america only had 200 million people back then!)
(the 2017 women's march had 5 million, for perspective!)

~environmentalism~ meant something very different fifty years ago - it was largely bipartisan, virtually no focus in racial/environmental justice, motivated by polar bears and tigers. but it also helped launch the EPA!
air pollution in the 1970s led Portland to introduce the transit mall, with free bus service downtown (which, of course, has since been axed)

sure would be great if carbon pollution in the 2020s would lead to investments in frequent/reliable transit service now!
