The myth that motor "sports" somehow drive engine improvements is PR bargaining and rationalization. It would not be touted and parroted everywhere if it were true.

Note that like horse racing, motor "sports" are mostly potlatch, the competitive destruction of wealth, a genteel match of wits between the billionaire set. They regard the crowds and the fans for what they are: servile - and often, paying - spectators.
