Despite popular opinion, the Catholic Church was the beacon of morality and human rights for most of history. During the Middle Ages, the Church was the only thing keeping literacy alive through monasticism and the sponsoring the growth of the world's first universities. The medieval Popes represented the only real counter to the authority of secular monarchs. The worst of the supposed atrocities of the Middle Ages such as the Spanish Inquisition were commuted by secular monarchs while Papal authority was at an all time low. (2)
During the conquest of the New World, the Pope issued several decrees condemning transatlantic slavery and the forced conversion and genocide of native populations. (3)
Many of the world's greatest scientists such as Gregor Mendel (the father of genetics) and Georges Lemaître (the founder of the Big Bang theory) were members of the Catholic clergy. (4)
So the idea that "The Church" is the root of all evil is a lie invented by Protestants and perpetuated by atheists who just so that happen to be behind the world's greatest atrocities. (5)
Our universities, hospitals, even our calendar wouldn't be what it is today if it weren't for the Catholic Church. (6)
