Just a pause to acknowledge how many of our children have not had to walk through metal detectors or through the gaze of police officers before a day of learning in the past month. The world has still turned. Life has gone on.
What pieces can we leave behind? What do we take with us? These will be the questions we must answer as we begin to grapple with reopening school buildings. There are possibilities that have grown out of crisis. There are opportunities here that we can access.
We don't have to go back to the way things were. Do we acknowledge we have that choice? Let's go back to something better, more responsive, more restorative, more flexible. Let's build spaces that didn't exist before.
Much of what our children knew, understood, + held to be true about the location, structure, and format of learning has changed. How will we demonstrate we are accepting that this change has offered us a chance to rise to our promises of equitable + racially just education?
