have not even left the starting gate yet. It won’t be long before the full horror of the economic impact will hit home, in real lives in real time, for most people. And that’s before we even start assessing the damage to our way of life, mental health and civil liberties.
Too many people seem oblivious to what’s in the post. The media are mentally bludgeoning people into losing their critical faculties. There are no easy answers. But I think lockdown needs to continue for the most vulnerable and the rest of us need to get back to our jobs. There..
will of course be consequences for any course of action but we appear to be sleep-walking into the worst of all worlds where we devastate our economy with no exit strategy to rebuild it.
The biggest problem for a clued-up government, and I’m not sure there is such a thing, is how to overcome the constant media barrage and make the hard decisions. It’s so easy for the media to play the “you don’t care about people dying” card, as to even engage with the question..
with anything other than emotional self-defence is considered electorally suicidal. But it isn’t. The reality is most people can see the state we are in, and there’s a genuine sense that the people understand how difficult this is. The government is too scared of the media.
Which in the end translates as a fear of losing power. Literally. Our political governance/media system as it is today is woefully ill-equipped to deal with a war-time style crisis. Even when our current government has a huge majority and should have the confidence to be bold.
